NeuroMovement for Down Syndrome: Aliyah & Anat Baniel Method Lessons
A short video showing some of the progress that Aliyah made using NeuroMovement and the Anat Baniel Method. She came to the Anat Baniel Method Center in San Rafael, CA. This clip shows her progress over a period of 20 months from 4 months to 2 years of age.
When a child has a genetic disorder, the spontaneous process of differentiation and formation of new patterns in the brain is not happening the way that it should. Most therapy approaches attempt to make the child do what she or he should be doing according to his or her age and expected developmental stage. Often they have very low expectations of the child since the challenges originate from a genetic disorder.
With the Anat Baniel Method (ABM), the focus is very different. Rather than try to fix the problem by focusing on limitations, the focus is shifted to where the solutions actually lie—with the brain. ABM and NeuroMovement focuses on helping the brain of the child with a genetic disorder do its job better. It helps the brain regain its ability to powerfully and consistently create new neural patterns that bring about successful solutions.
With the NeuroMovement approach of the Anat Baniel Method, children diagnosed with human genetic disorders like Fragile X syndrome, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Down syndrome, and other disorders have improved in remarkable ways, in both physical and cognitive functioning. It wasn't until I got to the end of this video that I realised the Aliyah in this video is actually my friends daughter! Her progress was amazing. I messaged her mother Cheryl yesterday and she told me her thoughts about ABM:
"I cannot tell you how happy I am that we discovered the ABM path at 4 months old!! We have never done a Neurodevelopmental program. For us, ABM had the right vibe & totally fit with our way of thinking. I owe everything about Aliyah's development to ABM. We didn't even do any supplements until she was 2. So, I know it was all the ABM work we were doing. "
We have personally used ABM with our daughter Beth and been delighted with the results. The most noticeable having occurred after her first session. Prior to her first appointment with the therapist we saw - Louise at Movement Made Effortless in Melbourne, Beth crawled on hands and knees with one knee consistently up. After Louise worked on Beth for one session she never did this again. I was blown away by it.
Within Australia as far as I am aware Louise is the only practitioner of ABM, however there are Feldenkrais practitioners all over Australia (ABM is a form of Feldenkrais).
